Tornado damages Durham

A tornado ripped through the town of Durham in southwestern Ontario around 5 o'clock this afternoon, leaving one person dead. The Storm uprooted trees, collapsed buildings and has left major power outages in the area.

No details of damage is available at this time, but eye witnesses state that the area has sustained considerable damage. Ontario Provincial Police have not yet released a statement. Emergency crews including police and local fire departments are at the scene.


Damage to Durham industrial section

Environment Canada released a severe storm warning about 4:30 pm, including the possibility of tornadoes, from Sarnia to Peterborough. The government web site currently displays a bold red warning of thunder storms and tornadoes.

Concidentally, it is four years almost to the day since Centre Wellington suffered a tornado which caused severe damage. In the early afternoon of Friday August 19, 2005 a twister hop-scotched across the country- side between Elora and Belwood, leaving a path of destruction.
