City's Water Level Returns to Blue

Web posted on November 01, 2012

GUELPH, ON, November 1, 2012 — Thanks to above average rainfall over the past two months, the City's Water Services department has lifted Level 2 outside water use restrictions in Guelph.

The decision to move the City's Outside Water Use Program (OWUP) to Level O Blue from Level 2 Red, where it has been since July, was made during a meeting of the Grand River Conservation Authority's (GRCA) Low Water Response team on Wednesday.

"Level 2 low water restrictions for Guelph were lifted because of increased rainfall that has helped to replenish Eramosa River flows back to historical averages for this time of the year," says Peter Busatto, general manager of Water Services.

However, Busatto advises that water conservation practices are still important as groundwater levels still remain lower than normal and it will take the fall and into late spring for levels to recover. For this reason, Guelph residents are reminded to be aware of their water use and to continue practising efficient use of water.

"We would like to thank the Guelph community for their ongoing commitment to the Outside Water Use Program and for reducing their outside water use during a very hot, dry summer," Busatto adds.

Guelph is one of the largest communities in Canada to rely solely on groundwater for its drinking water needs. The City of Guelph and GRCA, in accordance with the Ontario Low Water Response Plan, will continue to monitor watershed conditions during the fall and winter seasons to gauge recovery and the status of conditions in advance of the 2013 outdoor water use season.
