The Ontario Medal for Firefighter Bravery and the Ontario Medal for Police Bravery are the province's highest honours in recognition of firefighters and police officers whose actions demonstrate outstanding courage.

An independent body of citizens from the firefighting and policing communities chooses medal recipients. "The profound sense of bravery and duty exhibited by these recipients is an inspiration not only to their colleagues across the province but to all Ontarians." says the Honourable David C. Onley, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario

Three firefighters and 10 police officers received Ontario's top honours for acts of exceptional bravery.

The recipients of the Ontario Medal for Firefighter Bravery are:

  • Firefighter Bryan Gibbons of the Meaford and District Fire Department
  • Firefighter Jason Ronfeld of the Whitby Fire and Emergency Services
  • Firefighter John Sotiriou of the Whitby Fire and Emergency Services

The recipients of the Ontario Medal for Police Bravery are:

  • Sergeant John L. Jorginson of the Ontario Provincial Police, General Headquarters Detachment, Security Bureau

"Ontario's police officers and firefighters perform acts of bravery every day. The recipients of this year's medals have stared right into the face of danger so that lives could be saved and tragedy averted. They should wear their medals with pride." Comments Madeleine Meilleur, Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services.

The medals are presented at a special ceremony held at Queen's Park and hosted by the Lieutenant Governor. Since 1976 a total 201 Ontario Medals for Firefighter Bravery have been awarded and a total 244 Ontario Medals for Police Bravery have been awarded since 1975.
