GENERAL ALERT TO THE PUBLIC
The Guelph Police Service has received information about a telephone scam taking place in our City. Individuals have been receiving phone calls soliciting funds to buy teddy bears for traumatized and abused children. The caller purports to be a `Sergeant' with the local police service and requests donations via credit card transactions.
The Guelph Police Service would like to warn the general public about this Charity Scam. There have been similar incidents reported to other police services within Ontario. Here are some tips to help you from becoming a victim of telephone fraud:
>> When in doubt, ask for more information in writing about the organization calling or the offer being presented.
>> Never feel obligated to provide your credit card number/personal information over the phone.
>> Get as many details as you can. The fewer questions the caller can answer, the less likely he or she is legitimate.
>> Get a call-back number, either so you can initiate the call yourself or because you may need to report it later.
>> Stay informed so you're aware of the latest trends in telephone fraud.
>> Don't be afraid to hang up!
Anyone wishing to report a fraud of this nature is directed to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre @ www.antifraudcentre.ca or 1-888-495-8501. If you have become a victim of fraud and suffered a loss contact the Guelph Police Service.
