Driver Injured By Train While On Snowmobiling

(PERTH EAST TOWNSHIP, ON) - A 40 year old female from Perth East Township sustained non-life threatening injuries after being struck by a Via rail passenger train last night. The collision took place just east of Stratford near Perth Road 111 and Perth Line 34. Perth County OPP officers and Perth County Paramedics responded to the collision scene around 9:30 p.m.

An eastbound Via Rail passenger train carrying 80 passengers struck a 1999 Ski-Doo MXZ that was attempting to cross the railway tracks. Preliminary investigation has revealed the 40 year old female driver was travelling northbound from field to field when her snowmobile got stuck on the railway tracks at an uncontrolled crossing.

The passenger train collided with the snowmobile causing extensive damage to the machine. The female driver was transported to Stratford General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported.

The railway line was re-opened just after midnight.
