COYOTE OBSERVED NEAR SCHOOL PLAYGROUND
(MUNICIPALITY OF MEAFORD, ON) - On Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at approximately 12:50 p.m. Grey County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a report of a coyote being chased by a dog into the playground area at St. Vincent-Euphrasia School in Meaford.

Officers located hunters in the area who confirmed that their hunting dogs had lead them to the area by the school. All the dogs were accounted for, however, the coyote was not located.

Students remained inside the school until the area was searched and determined safe.

The following tips were received from the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) should you find yourself in the area of a coyote:

1. Stay calm and don't approach a coyote. Running can stimulate the animal's chase instinct.

2. Pick up any children or small pets around you to protect them from the coyote. If you can, slowly move toward an area with other people or a building.

3. Maintain direct eye contact with the animal to show your dominance.

4. Yell loudly to scare off the animal. Use a whistle, blaring music or pots and pans to create loud noises. Coyotes are timid by nature, and usually run away if challenged.

5. Throw sticks or rocks at the coyote to encourage the animal to leave. If you are by a hose, you can spray the animal.
