Thefts of purses from grocery carts update

On December 6, 2013 at 3:18 p.m., the Guelph Police attended to the Speedvale Plaza after receiving a call from the grocery store advising that their loss prevention officer had arrested a male for shoplifting and stealing a purse.

Police investigation determined that this was the same male responsible for four other purse thefts from incidents reported over the last few weeks.

Police were able to recover two of the stolen purses which will be returned to their owners. The total value of the thefts relating to these incidents is approximately $ 2,000 ($1,100 in cash). No bank cards or credit cards appear to have been compromised.

Christopher GALLO, 53 years of Guelph has been charged with six counts theft under $5,000. He will appear in court on January 14, 2014.

Male exposes himself - arrested

On December 7, 2013 at 9:11 a.m., the Guelph Police attended to a restaurant located in the plaza at Wellington Street and Gordon Street to deal with a disturbance. Investigation alleges that a male was observed inside the busy restaurant exposing himself to everyone. Police arrested the responsible male.

Joshua MALOTT, 28 years of Guelph has been charged with indecent act. He will appear in court on December 9, 2013.

R.I.D.E.

On December 7, 2013, the Guelph Police Service conducted a RIDE program at various locations throughout the city. Over 550 vehicles were checked. A roadside screening device was used on nine drivers, resulting in one driver being issued a three-day "Warn Range" suspension. As well, two drivers were arrested and charged with drive over 80 mg after failing at roadside.

Cesar LINARES, 30 years of Guelph has been charged with drive over 80 mg. He will appear in court on January 7, 2014.

Juliann RIOLO, 26 years of Guelph has been charged with drive over 80 mg. She will appear in court on January 3, 2014.

Their driver's licences were suspended for 90 days, and their vehicles were impounded for seven days. Guelph Police wish to remind all drivers that they will be conducting RIDE spot checks all over the city at random times with the arrival of the festive Holiday Season.

Firearm call

On Dec 7, 2013 at 12:46 a.m., the Guelph Police Service received report of a male waving a firearm around and pointing it at several people on the street in front of a Mountford Drive residence. Several members of uniform patrol and the Tactics and Rescue Unit (TRU) attended into the area. It was confirmed that a firearm was observed and one person sustained a cut to the hand attempting to disarm the male while on the street.

Through investigation, it was determined that the male with the firearm had gone into a residence with several other people. The house was contained by TRU and after a short period of time, six males were detained without incident as they exited the residence.

A 17-year-old Guelph male has been charged with assault, weapons dangerous, point firearm, assault with a weapon, use firearm in commission of offence, and three counts of fail to comply OIC undertaking. He has been held in custody and will appear in bail court on December 9, 2013.

A 15-year-old Guelph male has been charged with possession of a controlled substance (marijuana) CDSA, weapons dangerous, possession of a firearm and three counts of breach recognizance. He has been held in custody and will appear in court on December 9, 2013. A 14-year-old Guelph male has been charged with two counts of breach recognizance. He will appear in court on January 29, 2014.

Three males were released unconditionally.
