1st Ice Storm of Winter Arrives In Time For Christmas

Update - 11:40am - The freezing rain has mostly stopped for Guelph. Guelph Hydro has been seen around town removing fallen trees and branches from power lines. Hydro One is reporting over 100,000 customers are currently out of power. Toronto is reporting over 250,000 people are without power.

Update - 10:20am - Many intersections and stop lights are out all over the city. Motorists please remember that if the stop lights are out the intersection becomes a four way stop.

The major roads are being plowed and salted but motorists are urged to extra cautious and and encouraged not to travel unless absolutely necessary.

Trees are coming down all over the city. Pedestrians are reminded to be extra cautious of falling tree branches and falling ice.

Beginning early last night and continuing into the morning, Environment Canada's Sever Weather desk's ice storm has proven correct. With downed trees and hydro lines the freezing rain is still forecasted to continue until mid morning.

Hydro crews all over Southern Ontario are working to restore power to the hundred thousand currently without power.

In Guelph, The Fountain Pen has used our trusty all purpose and highly accurate measuring device(#2 steel ruler) to report that we have had 15mm of ice so far. Parts of Guelph and Wellington County and whole parts of Southern Ontario are without power.

For those who have internet access and are trying to check Hydro One's website for updates please note that Hydro One's server can not keep up with the demand for updates about where the power outages and or the estimated repair time.

The Fountain Pen is beginning to see repair progress from Hydro One. At 10:00am, it is reported that 91,000 customers are still without power' down from 100,000 customers earlier this morning.
