Drive over 80 mg - arrest

On January 9, 2014, at 5:55 p.m., the Guelph Police observed a motor vehicle eastbound on Waterloo Avenue with its rear plate completely blocked and covered by snow. A traffic stop was conducted and police spoke with the male driver. A demand was made for a roadside breath sample. He failed this test and was arrested.

James BRAUN, 52 years of Guelph, has been charged with drive over 80mg, Criminal Code and under the Highway Traffic Act for drive under suspension and entire plate not plainly visible. He was also charged under the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act with owner operate motor vehicle - no insurance. He will appear in court on January 21, 2014.


Mischief - arrest downtown

On January 9, 2014, at 11:35 p.m., the Guelph Police attended to a variety store located on Woolwich Street for the report that the front glass door was smashed. Police located the responsible male a short distance away and he was arrested. It is alleged that the male smashed the window portion of the door and broke the door knob.

A 16-year-old Guelph male has been charged with mischief under $5,000 and two counts of breach probation. He is held in custody pending a bail hearing on January 10, 2014.


Project Lifesaver successful again

On January 10, 2014 at 2:40 a.m., the Guelph Police attended to an old age home on Gordon Street to search for a missing female resident. The female is a member of Project Lifesaver and so that equipment was utilized. Police, using this search equipment were able to locate her safe and in the building at 2:52 a.m.

This type of search without Project Lifesaver would most likely have been lengthy and require a large deployment of police personnel and emergency responders.


Break and enter investigation leads to arrest

On June 22, 2013 the Guelph Police were called to a Norfolk residence, where there was a report of a break and enter. The front door of the residence was smashed and $200 taken.

On January 10, 2014, as a result of forensic evidence found at the scene, Naymatullah SAYFI, 19 years, from Guelph, was arrested and charged with break, enter and commit. He will appear in court on February 21, 2014.


Car fire

On January 10, 2014 at 10:30 a.m., the Guelph Police and Guelph Fire Department (GFD) responded to a working car fire at Spring Street and Havlock Street. Emergency services arrived on seen and observed a black 2006 Nissan Sedan smoking under the hood.

The smoke turned to fire and fully engulfed the front end of the black Nissan. The fire then spread to a 2008 Ford Explorer parked directly in front of the Nissan. The rear of the Explorer suffered severe damage.

GFD brought the fire under control within minutes. No one was injured. The total value of damage is approximately $40,000. There is no suspicion of foul play.
