Wellington County OPP Canine Struck by Car

(WELLINGTON COUNTY, ON) On January 16, 2014, at approximately 7:15 a.m., the Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Canine officer was exercising his police service dog named Dekker in a field on Side Road 11, Centre Wellington Township.

Dekker ran across the road and was struck by a passing car. He was transported to a local veterinary hospital where he died from his injuries. Dekker was a 9 year old German Shepherd and had served Wellington County for approximately 7 years.

The driver of the vehicle and the K-9 handler were not injured. Traffic was re-routed around the area for approximately an hour while OPP investigated the incident.

The investigation is continuing
