Have you received a call from someone purporting to be from "Windows Technical Support" talking about how their computer has a virus and unless you give them remote access to correct the problem, they will shut down your Windows programs on your computer.

The caller is very convincing, insistent and aggressive and has an answer for everything. It is believed that the goal of this phone call is for the suspects to get remote access to the computer to put spyware on it/ steal personal information and/or to get individuals to purchase "lifetime" virus protection.

Other variations of the scam also involve consumers responding to pop up ads online offering anti virus software. These pop‐ups are often referred to as Scareware as the message in the pop up is commonly crafted to entice feelings of alarm and anxiety. That there is a threat to their computer if they don't click on the link.

THINGS TO REMEMBER:
1. NEVER WIRE TRANSFER MONEY TO STRANGERS,
2. IF IT IS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE IT PROBABLY IS,
3. DON'T TRUST UNSOLICITED LETTERS, EMAILS, FAXES OR PHONE CALLS SEEKING ASSISTANCE INVOLVING MONEY ARE YOU REALLY SURE WHO IS ON THE OTHER END?
4. TALK TO OTHERS FOR ADVICE ABOUT YOUR SITUATION,
5. CALL YOUR LOCAL POLICE DEPARTMENT AND TALK TO A FRAUD INVESTIGATOR IF YOU HAVE LOST MONEY,
6. IF YOU FEEL PRESSURED, UNCOMFORTABLE OR SUSPICIOUS OF THE SITUATION, STEP BACK AND DO YOUR RESEARCH FOLLOW YOUR INSTINCTS!
