Two Car Collision Sends Three People to Hospital

(CENTRE WELLINGTON TWP., ON) On March 17, 2014 at 9:48 p.m. a member of the Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) observed a vehicle northbound on Wellington Road 7 at an extremely unsafe high rate of speed. The officer lost sight of the vehicle and for safety reasons began to head in the direction the vehicle was last seen at the posted limit.

A short time later the officer arrived upon the scene of a serious collision involving a local taxi cab and the vehicle observed speeding earlier. The Centre Wellington Fire Rescue Department and Guelph-Wellington Emergency Medical Services (EMS) attended the scene.

The driver of the cab, 49-year-old David SANDERSON from Fergus and a passenger in the taxi, 29-year-old Andrew DEBARTOLO from Elora were transported to an area hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the speeding vehicle, 32-year-old Donald VAN ZEYL from Fergus was arrested at the scene for impaired driving and taken into OPP custody for breath tests. He was later taken to an area hospital for observation.

Wellington County OPP Technical Collisions Investigators and Scenes of Crime Officers assisted with the investigation.

As a result of the investigation, the accused has been charged with;
--> Impaired Driving Causing Bodily Harm x 2 Criminal Code (C.C.)
--> Fail or Refuse to Provide a Breath Sample C.C.
--> Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle Causing Bodily Harm x2 C.C.
--> Drive Under Suspension Highway Traffic Act
He is scheduled to appear in Bail Court today to answer to the charges.
