Recall - Rechargeable Batteries in Summer Infant Products

The recall involves rechargeable batteries in Summer Infant handheld colour video monitors. The rechargeable batteries are about 1 " tall by 2 1/4" wide and are 1/4" thick, black, and are marked with TCL on the lower right corner of the battery. Monitors are sold with a matching camera and A/C adaptors. Batteries will have one of these letter and number combinations in the beginning of the serial number on the back of the battery:

The battery in the handheld video monitor can overheat and rupture, posing a burn hazard to consumers. Consumers should immediately stop using the video baby monitors with the recalled batteries and contact Summer Infant for information on battery replacement. The monitor can continue to be used on AC power with the power cord.

In Canada, Summer Infant has received 5 reports of overheated and ruptured batteries, including incidents of smoke and minor property damage.

Health Canada has not received any reports of consumer incidents or injuries in Canada related to the use of the rechargeable batteries.

The affected rechargeable batteries were sold from February 2010 to December 2012. In Canada, approximately 49,000 of the recalled products were sold at Toys R Us, Babies R Us, Walmart, Sears,, Best, Target, Amazon, Home and specialty stores.

The affected products were manufactured in China and imported through Summer Infant, Woonsocket, Rhode Island.
