Guelph Fire Attend a Third Floor Apartment Fire

Web posted on May 06, 2014

GUELPH, ON, On May 2, 2014 at 09:46, the Guelph Fire Department responded to a report of smoke coming from the upper windows and a smoke alarm sounding at 4 Home St. in Guelph. Fire apparatus from three stations responded to the scene. The initial arriving unit found smoke coming from the eaves of the building and from open windows on the third floor.

The front door of the unit was forced to gain entry and an aggressive interior attack was made on the fire in the kitchen. The fire was quickly brought under control and extinguished. A thorough search of the apartment confirmed that there were no residents home at the time of the fire, although crews did find a cat that was unharmed.

There was extensive fire, smoke and water damage to the unit involved. The remainder of the building was left inhabitable. Only the resident of the involved unit is displaced.

There were no injuries to firefighting personnel. The cat was brought out of the apartment and was placed in the care of a nearby veterinary clinic.

Fire Prevention is conducting an investigation into the cause of the fire. At this time, the cause of the fire is believed to be accidental as a result of a stovetop burner being left on. A preliminary estimate of damage is approximately $50,000.

Guelph Police Services (GPS) and Guelph Wellington Emergency Medical Services (GWEMS) were also on scene in support of the Fire Department.
