The City of Guelph Has Joined ON1Call Service

Guelph, ON, June 24, 2014 On June 19, 2014 the City of Guelph joined the provincially legislated locate service, ON1Call. Underground infrastructure owners, which include telecommunications companies, natural gas providers and municipalities, are legislated through the Ontario Underground Infrastructure Notification System Act to register with the provincially designated locate service provider.

"Now that we're registered with ON1Call, homeowners and contractors only have to make one call for municipal infrastructure locates, and for all other buried infrastructure," noted Peter Busatto, general manager of Water Services. "We're pleased with the convenience and safety this service will provide to our residents and businesses, as well as the reduced risk of damage to infrastructure we all rely on."

Homeowners and contractors make one request for locates through ON1Call either online at on1call.com or by phone at 1-800-400-2255. ON1Call distributes locate requests to the various underground infrastructure owners. ON1Call is a 24hour, free service.

Examples of activities that require locate requests include post hole digging for decks and fences, new pool installations, laying new driveways and walkways, tree planting, digging new gardens, and installing light standards.

Beginning in January 2015, the City will be required to pay $1.60 for each locate request that ON1Call administers for the City.

The Province legislated this service citing concerns for the security of buried infrastructure; the safety of homeowners and contractors who are sometimes fatally injured due to accidents while digging; costs resulting from accidental damage to Ontario's infrastructure estimated at $63 million per year; and simplicity for homeowners and contractors when requesting locates.
