The Guelph Police Services Board (GPSB) is pleased to announce the appointment of Deputy Chief Jeffrey DeRuyter to the rank of Acting Chief of Police effective August 31, 2014.

"On behalf of the members of the Police Services Board, we are confident that Acting Chief DeRuyter will continue to advance the mission of the Guelph Police Service with a strong focus on community policing while providing the highest delivery of services to the citizens of Guelph. Acting Chief DeRuyter has a strong track record of leadership coupled with a passion for policing excellence" said Judy Sorbara, Chair of the Board.

Acting Chief De Ruyter commenced his policing career as a Police Constable with the Guelph Police Service (GPS) in 1984. During his tenure with the GPS he has held a number of progressively responsible positions including leadership responsibilities in Neighbourhood Services, Investigative Support Services, Professional Standards Unit and most recently served as the Deputy Chief of Police.

The GPSB has been actively working on a succession plan to address the departure of Chief Bryan Larkin, who will officially resign command of the Guelph Police Service on Saturday, August 30, 2014.

This plan will also include a thorough process for the selection of the next permanent Chief of Police as well as reviewing the core competencies and skill sets including Board expectations. A series of other internal transfers will occur as part of the succession planning process.

The Guelph Police Service is the 15th largest municipal police service in Ontario with 288 members with a net operating budget of $35 million. The Service is responsible for the delivery of policing services to the more than 120 000 citizens of the City of Guelph and is built on the values of Pride, Service, and Trust.
