16th Annual Bike Ticket Helmet program

The Guelph Police Service concluded their 16th annual Bike Ticket Helmet program last evening where they presented two new bikes courtesy of George Vettor Cycle to Robert Munro and Mikayla Finamore.

This year, members of the service handed out 943 Dairy Queen Mini Blizzard tickets to area youth found wearing their bicycle helmets. This year's total increased the sixteen year total to 17, 240 and 32 free bikes have been given out to the yearly winners.

Impaired driver/canine track/arrested

On August 22, 2014 at 1:30 a.m., the Guelph Police conducted a traffic stop with a motor vehicle on Woolwich Street in regard to suspected impaired driving. When the vehicle came to a stop the male driver got out and fled on foot. The canine unit attended the scene and was able to locate the man hiding in some bushes a short distance away and arrested him.

A 29-year-old Fergus man has been charged with impaired driving, drive over 80mg, escape lawful custody, breach undertaking as well as two counts of driving while suspension (HTA). He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing on August 22, 2014.

Break and enter

On August 21, 2014 at 5:00 p.m., the Guelph Police went to an Arkell Road residence to investigate a break and enter. The culprit(s) entered through a basement window sometime over the last several weeks while the home had been vacant. No theft is reported but there was some damage caused.

Break and enter

On August 21, 2014 at 6:00 p.m., the Guelph Police went to a Huron Street residence to investigate a break and enter. The culprit(s) entered the basement. No theft or damage is reported.

Thieves try to steal ATM

On August 20, 2014 at 3:16am, Guelph Police responded to an alarm at an establishment on Woodlawn Road West. It is alleged that unknown culprits used a stolen pickup truck to smash the front doors. The culprits attempted to remove an ATM from the premise, but the damage that was caused to the building prohibited them from doing so.

The stolen Chevrolet pickup truck was left behind. The culprits left the area in a small black car, in an unknown direction. Damage to the building is structural and is estimated at over $75,000.

Shoplifters arrested

On August 19, 2014 at 1:43 p.m., the Guelph Police went to Walmart on Woodlawn Road East to assist with an arrested shoplifter. It is alleged that two men left the store with a cart full of merchandise without paying for it. The Loss Prevention Officer was able to arrest one of the men but the other ran from the area.

Police continued the investigation and located more stolen merchandise in the man's truck. This property had been stolen from the Kitchener Walmart. Police were able to identify the second male and he was arrested at 5:40 p.m.

Hendrix Dimatteo-Wright, 19 years of Hillsburgh has been charged with theft under $5,000 and possession of stolen property under $5,000. He will appear in court on October 3, 2014.

David Canavan, 22 years of Hillsburgh has been charged with theft under $5,000 and possession of stolen property under $5,000. He will appear in court on October 3, 2014.

Stolen bike found on Kijiji arrest made

On August 19, 2014 at 6:21 p.m., the Guelph Police received a complaint from the owner of a stolen bicycle that his bike was for sale on Kijiji. Police investigation led to an arrest and the recovery of the bike.

A 21-year-old Guelph male has been charged with possession of stolen property under $5,000 and is held in custody pending a bail hearing on August 20, 2014.
