A Curmudgeon's View

By Les Enekes

The Terrorist (I refuse to use the word Islamic) State has struck again. From now on I will be referring to them as TSIS. They have created a very narrow and perverted interpretation of Islam to suit their goals. They want to cleanse the planet of every person who is not a believer in their way of life. It does not matter whether you are Christian, Jewish, Muslim, or any other religion, they want you dead in the most gruesome possible way. This has the potential of going beyond anything that has happened in the past. It is us or them. They are not people or even humans. They are like the invaders from the movie Independence Day when asked what they wanted us to do and the reply was "Die."

We do not negotiate with cancer, we do not negotiate with cockroaches. We do whatever it takes to eliminate cancer, sometimes we win sometimes we don't. We haven't been able to kill all the cockroaches, but we are working on it. This is not going to be a short or clean conflict. In fact it might have to get very dirty. Anyone who thinks otherwise is living in a dream world.

The investigation is ongoing and no matter what I submit, it will have changed by the time it is posted here. All the indications are that it was a very low tech effort in comparison to 911. Finding soft targets like concerts, and restaurants is easy. You don't even need tickets to an event, just shoot your way in.

Bill C-51 was a good start. I will take a hit to my rights and freedoms over being dead. We cannot withdraw our CF-18s from the current mission. This must be reconsidered immediately. If anything more should be done. We have special forces training the locals. Do we know who we are training? Will they turn on us like some rabid animal? Yes we need to provide humanitarian aid over there. Some deluded people are saying that we should be peacekeepers. That is all well and good if the groups involved want peace

Trying to find a political solution and getting everyone on the same side, well that's another story. All the usual suspects are saying the same thing as usual, but when it comes down to doing something, just look at the track record sine 911. Herding cats is far easier and more productive. I am not even counting the countries in the neighbourhood. What will it take to get a true international and meaningful response? There is a report of a new framework for a potential agreement from the talks in Vienna about changing the regime in Syria. We shall see.

As for the refugees, while we should try to do our fair share, we need to be prudent and cautious. Take whatever time it takes to do a proper job. We have to be right 100% of the time, otherwise the unthinkable will happen. Don't be tied to some unrealistic promise made in the heat of an election campaign. I will have a lot more to say about this in a future column.

To the people of Paris and France, you have my most sincere condolences. Vive la France.

This was not the column I had planned for this week, but I felt something needed to be said. With any luck my regularly scheduled rant will return next week.

I would like to congratulate the students and staff of John McCrae School for their excellent presentation on Remembrance Day. Instead of the traditional service, they came up with a well written and presented play. It was well received by those in attendance. Everyone agreed that it was one of the best attended services. Also, congratulations on the renovations at McCrae House. A job well done.
