Our Refugee Crisis

A Curmudgeon's View

By Les Enekes

For about a month after the new government was sworn in, they went to great lengths to fulfill a rash promise made in the heat of the election campaign to bring in 25,000 refugees before the end of last year. It might have looked good on the evening news but does not look as good when reality sets in. They were running around like chickens with their heads cut off to make it happen at all costs (our money). Then realization set in. They could not get it done as promised. They then promised 10,000 before the end of 2015, and the rest by the end of February.

Refugees and their descendants make up a substantial portion of our current population. With very few exceptions they have become proud Canadians. Some have become very successful. Yes there were some criminals, but that is an element of every society. We have a long and proud history of accepting refugees. The difference between then and now is that previous groups of refugees did not have the potential of having their ranks infiltrated by people who wanted to harm us.

We had an orderly process of accepting and relocating refugees in place. That could have been streamlined and the 25,000 could have been put into the queue. Yes, it would have taken longer, and of course the cost would have been more reasonable. For some people money is no object when it's our money. This does not even take into consideration the added stress for all our people, both here and processing over there. Not to mention the stress related illness that is bound to happen. How much overtime was used? How many of our people had to spend Christmas away from home? These are the hidden costs not even mentioned.

The whole process is mind boggling from the processing at the other end, to transporting the refugees across the Atlantic. Then comes finding temporary accommodation (hotels near the airports at our expense), food, clothing, health care (how many will have PTSD?) and everything else they need at this end. Then relocated to their new homes. The aid agencies were stretched to the limit. Trying to do this a the busiest time of the year for many agencies and groups was just insane. Most aid agencies have trouble keeping up with our own homeless and poor people at that time of year. Of course the first flights had to be photo ops for the politicians concerned. Well, they did not make the 10,000 as promised by year's end. Gee what a surprise. The more they talked, the less they said, and everything slowed down. Will they get everyone here by the end of February? The story keeps changing. I plan to come back as needed with my perspective on the situation.

It is the stated intent of the Terrorist State to infiltrate the refugees with their people. There have been reports of people with fake Syrian passports caught in Costa Rica, Honduras, and Sint Maarten (Dutch side of the island with the main airport for those of you who have not been to this wonderful island). How did they make it to those countries without being caught? How did they afford to get to these sunny destinations? Are they potential refugees or potential terrorists? We are finding out that the Terrorist State has the equipment to make legitimate passports. So now we have real, but fake passports. Too many questions, not enough answers.

Time will tell if we were able to screen out potential terrorists. Our people at the other end are doing the best they can with what they are not given. Just think about the person or persons who processed the first character who commits an act of terror because they were rushed to get the job done. The ultimate responsibility for any bad apples getting through will be on those people who made the reckless decision in the first place.
