Canadian Anglican Church Suffers Shipwreck

Light For The Journey

By Rev. Royal Hamel

The Anglican Church of Canada by an official vote has taken the decision to conduct same-sex marriage in their churches. For many of us who have been watching the Anglican Church for the past decade this comes as no surprise. However the news of this historic departure from Christian teaching does cause us considerable sadness as we watch them self-destruct as a church.

We can thank God for the dissenting Anglican Network in Canada which holds to the historic Anglican doctrines on sexuality and marriage. The three bishops of this new denomination expressed profound regret at the decision, which they said was "clearly in contrast to the scriptural teaching of marriage and moves the Anglican Church of Canada apart from the Anglican Communion worldwide."

Some readers may ask, "Why should this issue of same-sex marriage be a concern to Evangelical Christians?" Isn't this an issue that only the mainline churches are struggling with? No, that's simply not the case. Even now among Evangelicals emerging voices are questioning the historic interpretation of biblical teaching on homosexuality. In my opinion evangelical churches by their deadly silence on this issue have already given up much ground, paving the way for an alternate interpretation of scripture that sooner or later will be introduced and accepted into many of their churches.

Indeed, I predict that sooner rather than later, there will be a struggle for the soul of every church in Canada on precisely this issue. I predict that many churches will cave on the marriage question - they will accept new cultural definitions that have nothing to do with biblical Christianity.

If evangelical pastors are wise they will be on their guard now. They will steadfastly resist the temptation to abandon scriptural teaching on this subject. We pastors need to study the scriptures on marriage and sexuality, and then faithfully impart truth to the flock so they will not be led astray by unsound teaching. The book of Jude urges us to, "contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. For certain men have crept in unnoticed who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ."

Today it is the Anglican Church of Canada that has been swept over the falls of apostasy. A prominent evangelical pastor from Toronto, Dr. Joe Boot, recently stated, "With the recent vote to officially endorse same-sex marriage, the Anglican Church of Canada has at last demonstrated its faithless and apostate leadership. True Christians must get out."

Tomorrow it may well be that some evangelical churches will be swept away by unsound teaching. Therefore, we evangelicals must not be smug, nor complacent as we observe the doctrinal shipwreck taking place in certain churches. For all believers will face siren calls to accommodate with the Spirit of Jezebel and the Spirit of Balaam (Rev. 2). The only way to stay on course is to recapture a counter-culture mindset governed by God, and guided by scripture. Heeding God's word, Canadian pastors with the spirit's help must row bravely against the cultural current. And while rowing we should remember the words of the famous Puritan pastor, Richard Sibbs, " A curse lies upon those, that, when the truth suffers, have not a word to defend it".

I challenge ordinary Christians and pastors - let us unflinchingly proclaim unchanging truth that includes grace, hope and love. Let us diligently trumpet the Good News that full deliverance is available through Christ to all those tempted and trapped by the various sexual idols of our age.

P.S.
