Recall - Starbucks Stainless Steel Straw

Web posted on August 03, 2016

There is a joint recall with Health Canada, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (US CPSC) and Starbucks Coffee Company. This affects the Stainless Steel Cold-to-Go Straws

This recall involves Grande and Venti sized reusable stainless steel drinking straws, sold either in packages of three, or as part of Grande and Venti sized beverage cups with stainless steel straws.

The stainless steel straws were available in two sizes:

  • Grande: Approximately 24 centimetres (9.5 inches) in length and 0.76 centimetres (0.3 inches) in diameter for 473 millilitre (16 ounce) sized cups

  • Venti: Approximately 26.4 centimetres (10.4 inches) in length and 0.76 centimetres (0.3 inches) in diameter for 710 millilitre (24 ounce) sized cups

Each straw has a ridge at the bottom that prevents the straw from being fully pulled through the hole in the cup's lid.

The stainless steel straws may pose an injury hazard for young children using them while simultaneously engaged in activities, such as running or jumping. Consumers should immediately take the stainless steel straws away from children and not allow children to handle or use the product, or dispose of the product in regular household garbage.

Health Canada has not received any reports of consumer incidents or injuries related to the use of this product. Starbucks Coffee Canada, Inc. has received one report of injury to a child's mouth.

In the United States, Starbucks Coffee Company has received 3 reports of lacerations to children's mouths.

The recalled products were sold from June 2012 to June 2016. Approximately 301,261 straws were sold in Starbucks locations across Canada, and approximately 2.5 million straws were sold in the United States.

The product was manufactured in China and distributed through Starbucks Coffee Canada Inc., Toronto, Ontario.

For more information, consumers may contact Starbucks Coffee Canada by telephone toll-free at 1-800-782-7282, from 3:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. PST daily. Consumers may also visit Starbucks Coffee's website and click on "stainless steel straw warnings" for more information.
