Construction: Edinburgh Road South Bridge

The City is starting construction work to the Edinburgh Road South bridge closure for waterproofing and paving starting July 31, 2017.

The bridge will be closed to all traffic, including pedestrians and cyclists, beginning July 31 for about three weeks. The designated vehicle detour is via Stone Road, Gordon Street and Wellington Street. The pedestrian/cyclist detour is via the Silvercreek Park east trails (east of Edinburgh) and the dam crossing or Gow's bridge. At the bridge over the Speed River, south of Wellington Street

The City is working with Capital Paving Inc. to:

  • Remove and repair concrete curbs and sidewalk
  • Waterproof the bridge deck, and
  • Repave the road surface.
  • All work will take place on City property.

Road work is expected to start on or about July 31 and continue for approximately three weeks, weather permitting.

Edinburgh Road closed at bridge
Edinburgh Road will be completely closed to all through traffic at the bridge over the Speed River for the duration of the work.

The through traffic detour is route is via Stone Road, Gordon Street and Wellington Street. Please follow the posted detour. Residential roads are not designated detour routes. For the safety of the community, the City asks that drivers use the designated detour route.

Local traffic will be maintained south of the closure from College Avenue, and north of the closure from Wellington Street.

Business and property access
No property access or parking will be affected by the project. All businesses on Edinburgh Road south of the closure will remain open and accessible from College Avenue.

Work hours will be Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Some noise due to equipment movement may be expected during work hours. The contractor will make every effort to minimize noise.

Pedestrian access
The pedestrian sidewalk over the bridge will be closed throughout the project. Pedestrians must travel along Water Street to McCrae Boulevard and cross the river at Gow's bridge.

Guelph Transit
Guelph Transit route 8 will be temporarily detoured during construction. Visit for information about stop changes and route detours.

City services
There will be no interruption to any City services during construction. Waste collection will not be affected. Please continue to place your green, blue and grey carts at the curb, as per your regular schedule.
