Fraud suspects arrested

Posted on Monday August 21, 2017 Subscribe via RSS Subscribe via e-mail In July of 2017, a north-end hardware store advised police of merchandise that had been ordered on-line using fraudulent information.

At approximately 2:15pm on August 20th, police were alerted that someone was at the store to pick-up that merchandise and when they arrived a female was arrested at the scene. There was another male involved who fled on foot and was arrested after a lengthy foot chase.

Nicole Marie Voogt, a 24 year old resident of St. Catharines, was charged with fraud under $5000 and possession of property obtained by crime. She was later released to appear in Guelph court on September 1, 2017.

The 31 year old male who fled, is a resident of Etobicoke and he is charged with a total 12 different criminal charges including obstruct police, resist arrest, drug possession and other fraud-related offences. He was held in custody and will appear in Guelph bail court.

Bait bike leads to arrest

On August 17 & 18, 2017, members of the High Enforcement Action Team (HEAT) conducted a Bait Bike Project. This follows the same project that was conducted in July 2016 by HEAT. The Bait Bike Project is aimed at tackling the ongoing issues with bicycle thefts in the City of Guelph. A bait bike was deployed in the Downtown core equipped with a tracking device. The bait bike was also under observations by members of HEAT.

On the morning of August 18, 2017, a male suspect was seen removing the lock and riding away on the bait bike. HEAT officers arrested the suspect a short distance away. A 33 year old male was charged with theft under $5000, possession of stolen property under $5000 and breach of probation. He was held for a bail hearing.

Members of HEAT then set up the bait bike up again. Shortly after 11am, two males and a female were seen removing the lock and stealing the bait bike. A male and female were arrested a short distance away in possession of the bait bike. The second male was arrested after fleeing from the scene.

A 38 year old male was charged with theft under $5000 and possession of stolen property under $5000. He was released to appear in court at a later date.

A 26 year old female was charged with theft under $5000, possession of stolen property under $5000, possession of a controlled substance, breach of probation, possession of stolen credit card and possession of break-in instruments. She was held for a bail hearing.

A 36 year old male was charged with theft under $5000, three counts of possession of stolen property under $5000 , two counts of possession of controlled substance ( believed to be marijuana and crystal methamphetamine), breach of probation and seven counts of possession of identity documents. He was held for a bail hearing.

The Bait Bike Project will continue to be an ongoing initiative in the City of Guelph.

Internal investigation at pharmacy

Management at a Guelph area pharmacy grew suspicious when routine monitoring of certain pharmaceutical drugs revealed discrepancies in their inventory. A number of additional security measures were put in place that identified an employee who had been responsible. It is alleged that the employee was specifically acquiring Oxycodone pills.

On August 19th, Jordanah Mackie, 28 years of age from Guelph was arrested and charged with fraud under $5000, uttering a forged documents and possession of a controlled substance. She was later released to appear in court on October 6, 2017.

Impaired drivers

It was an unusually busy weekend for alcohol-related driving arrests where four people were apprehended in separate incidents.

At approximately 1:39am on August 20th, police observed a 2008 red Mazda driving erratically on Elizabeth Street and stopped it to investigate. Interaction with the male driver led police to believe that his ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by alcohol and he was arrested for impaired driving. The male subsequently failed additional testing at the station and was further charged with operate a motor vehicle over .08mgs.

Azizbek Egamberdiyev, a 21 year old Guelph man was charged with both of those offences and was later released to appear in court on August 29, 2017.

At approximately 8:30pm on August 19th, police were called to the intersection of Edinburgh Road and College Avenue regarding a stalled Honda Civic. Interaction with the driver led to his arrest for having care and control of a motor vehicle while impaired. The male subsequently failed additional testing at the station.

Bronsen Pronk, 22 years of age from Fergus was charged with care and control of a motor vehicle while impaired and care and control of a motor vehicle over .08mgs. He was later released to appear in court on September 1, 2017.

At approximately 2:26am on August 20th on police came across a pick-up truck on Poppy Drive that was attempting to pull out a blue 2004 Audi A4 that had gone off the roadway. The driver of the Audi registered a "fail" on an approved roadside screening device and was arrested.

Austin Hoekstra, a 20 year old Guelph man was charged with operate a motor vehicle over .08mgs and later released to appear in court on August 29, 2017.

On Saturday, August 19, 2017 at approximately 7:15pm police observed a blue Chrysler Sebring with an expired validation permit driving at a high rate of speed in the area of Gordon and Wellington Street.

The vehicle was stopped and during the interaction with the male driver, one of the grounds to believe that the male driver may be impaired by alcohol was when asked for a valid driver's licence, he produced a bank card. The driver registered a "fail" on an approved roadside screening device and was arrested. He later failed additional testing at the station.

Travis Wright, a 26 year old from Georgetown was charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and operate a motor vehicle over .08mgs. He was later released to appear in court on September 1, 2017.
