YWCA Free Life After Breast Cancer Support Group

Web posted on September 13, 2017

GUELPH, Ontario The YMCA-YWCA of Guelph's ENCORE (after breast cancer) program is offered free of charge to women (both members and non-members) who have experienced breast cancer or breast reconstructive surgery at any time in their lives.

The program will be offered at the YMCA-YWCA of Guelph (130 Woodland Glen Drive) on Tuesday evenings from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. from September 26th to November 14th, 2017.

Breast cancer represents not only a major physical battle but also the ultimate emotional challenge one that affects every facet of your life. ENCORE is more than an exercise program, it is a supportive environment designed to help participants get strong, both inside and out.

One participant discusses the importance of the program to her, "The best part was being with women whether younger or older who understood me, understood what cancer was and had survived. Age didn't matter in this group."

The supportive environment has not only helped countless women with recovery, it has also touched the lives of the coordinators who work with these women for eight weeks. "Our intent with ENCORE is to provide women with knowledge they can use for their lives beyond breast cancer," says Stephanie True Allin, Guelph Y Fitness Personal Trainer and Encore Coordinator. "In so many ways, we gain so much in our lives and careers from every single woman we spend eight weeks with."

During this eight week program, participants will hear from guest speakers presenting seminars on everything from the science behind lymph drainage and physiotherapy to stress management and laughter yoga. Through the wide variety of guest speakers, women will learn useful life skills such as: self-care, stress and anxiety management, nutrition guidelines, and lymphedema management.

The exercises include gentle floor and pool exercises as well as relaxation techniques that are designed to improve mobility and flexibility in the chest, arms, and shoulders while also relieving some discomforts associated with surgery.

The ENCORE program is one of many community initiatives on behalf of the Guelph Y that supports women at every stage of their lives. Registration is now open for the fall session of Guelph Y's ENCORE program. For more information and to register please visit or visit us in person at Member Services.
