A little night-time fun

Web posted on March 01, 2004

Well, well, well... our little Guelph is growing up.

There I was, watching tonight's city council meeting, waiting for that funky exit music when, all of a sudden, it happened. Terrier versus bulldog. Councillor Laidlaw, my favourite council rep, started to ask about the evening's agenda. Apparently, her name was left off of it, along with two other councillors' names. As soon as this information had left her mouth, Mayor Quarrie jumped in, said it was all her fault, oops, sorry, and so on. Gosh, she seemed to be trying to shut my girl up. But Maggie, terrier that she is, kept talking because she wanted an explanation. She started to make a comment on the similarities between the names not appearing on the agenda and the names of councillors who voted against the Mayor in the development charges debate... at least that's what I think I heard before the Mayor said the meeting was over and left the room.

Wow! Our new mayor's first hissy-fit... on live television. It was beautiful to see just how gracefully she flounced out of the council chambers, leaving a horseshoe full of disbelieving and confused elected officials in her wake. Makes me misty-eyed just thinking about it. As the young ones say, You Go, Girl!

You know, I can't remember the last time I saw a Guelph mayor do such a thing. Now, in Toronto the weird, I believe it happened a few times before, but in Guelph? It seems that our politicians are starting to act like big-city types, and I'm not sure if these kids are ready for it. Heck, I don't know if I'm up for it yet.

Now, Maggie, you know you're my favourite. I've watched you grow up from local gadfly to elected gadfly, and have seen you do great things. But, I was wondering just where you were going with your comments. You seemed to be heading towards dangerous territory, kiddo, and frankly, I was glad Mrs. Mayor decided to upstage you.

Say something nice or say nothing at all, and always leave 'em wanting more, my mom always said. I guess Kate's mum said the same thing to her. Let's wait and see just what happens in the next few days.
