(LONDON, ON) Members of the West Region Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Traffic Unit are reminding all motorists to be extra careful this time of year and to anticipate late evening and early morning fog conditions.

It will be 16 years since the fiery crash on September 3, 1999 on the 401Highway that claimed the lives of 8 people and injured 45 after 87 vehicles collided in dense fog. Though many changes have come into effect, the fact remains that many people have no idea how to drive in foggy conditions.

Fog can form when the cool evening air brushes over warm ground surfaces that have been heated by the sun throughout the day. The interaction creates dense patchy fog that can create zero visibility for motorists. The "ground fog" is encountered during late evening hours and early morning hours as it drifts off the fields and onto roadways.

"Drivers need to slow down and be careful, it's that simple!" OPP Traffic Inspector Dave Lee.

Safe Driving Tips Fog;
Check before you gowait until fog clears or is reduced
Seat belt on
Radio off (so you can hear; vehicles, horns, sirens)
Vehicle front and rear lights on
Reduce speed (below posted limit)
Allow extra distance between vehicles
Use 4-way flashers if travelling below the speed limit
If you can't see, pull well off the roadway safely and stop stay in your vehicle
If you are in a collision, get off the roadway if safe to do so stay in your vehicle

Always make sure your vehicle is in good running shape before you drive. Check your windshield wipers. Make sure they are in good repair and your washer fluid is full.
