School Safety Officers Join Walking School Bus

Web posted on January 10, 2020

On the morning of January 9th, 2020, Guelph Police Service School Safety officers participated in the walking school bus at Mitchell Woods Public School in the City of Guelph. They were joined by 7 children, a parent and 2 dogs.

The initiative was started by the Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Active and Safe Routes to School Committee. The program is supported by WellingtonDufferin Student Transportation Services (STWDSTS), in collaboration with WellingtonDufferinGuelph Active & Safe Routes to School (WDGASRTS) agencies, Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB), Wellington Catholic District School Board (WCDSB), WellingtonDufferinGuelph Public Health and the City of Guelph.

There are three schools participating in the project, Mitchell Woods Public School, Ken Danby Public School and Holy Trinity Catholic School. School Safety officers participated in a walk with every school in the fall and will be joining them again in the winter months. It is a wonderful program for students to set healthy habits, relieve traffic congestion, learn safe routes to school, traffic safety and develop new friendships!

The Guelph Police Service would like to remind the public to be extra careful when driving in school zones, especially at the start and end of the school day.
