Guelph MPP calls for renter assistance

Web posted on March 29, 2020

GUELPH, ON -- Mike Schreiner issued the following statement in response to the government's inaction on emergency relief for renters:

"I'm disappointed that the Premier continues to leave renters in the lurch as April 1 looms.

Ontario must implement an emergency rent relief fund of up $2,000 per tenant to bridge the gap.

While there are heartwarming stories of landlords giving tenants a break, this is not universal.

There is too much on the line for the millions of renters across the province to rely exclusively on the goodwill of landlords, who themselves must pay the bills.

We must calm the rising anxiety of renters and landlords.

With federal relief still weeks away, the province has a responsibility to shore up this unstable situation and give renters and small landlords peace of mind.

I reiterate my call for the province to access the $3.8 billion contingency and reserve fund approved this week and establish an Emergency Rent Relief Fund."
